Snow on the roof

December 18, 2010
Now that we have snow on the ground it is easy to check the insulation in you house and your neighbors.  All you need to do is look at the roof.  If after it snows all the snow quickly melts off that is an accurate indicator that there isn't enough insulation; heat is being lost into the attic which in turn melts the snow on the roof.  Whereas if after several days you still have lots of snow on the roof that means there is little heat loss and quickly tells you have more insulation that your neighbor.
So......, how much insulation is enough?  It should be approximately R-50.
Stay warm.
