For those of us who are either already Empty Nesters or are about to become an empty nester one of the most ordinary places in your home can also be one of the most dangerous. How many times each and every day do we go up and down the stairs? Falling on the stairs can be especially dangerous with significant results. Everyone knows that there needs to be a hand-rail; everyone knows that. But, how many of us have a hand-rail on only one side? I would venture to say that the vast majority of staircases have hand-rails but on only one side. As we grow older the need for a railing on both sides of the staircase becomes increasingly important. This may seem like a trivial detail but it is very significant. Further, do you know the correct height off the step for the railing? When a railing is being installed it needs to be between 34" and 38" above the nose of the stair tread. There is a lot more to stairs and tomorrow we will talk more. Be careful and safe!
