Today let’s back up a step or two and look at the consequences of doing a great job of stopping the Cold Air Penetration.
Dealing with Cold Air is only one part of your home’s complete system. In life none of us are completely separated from others; the same is true in your home. There are times when we need outside air to come into the home; it just needs to be done correctly.
Down in the basement many of us have gas or propane fired hot-water-heaters. When the gas is burning it consumes oxygen that is in the air; that is an essential part of the process and we all remember this from third grade science class. Right?
In years past the gas fired hot-water-heater simply took air for the fire from the basement and “poof, problem solved.” As homes became better built and more tightly sealed the air/oxygen that is burned comes from inside the house and is not replaced because you have done such a good job with Cold Air Penetration.
Today’s modern heating appliances all have a source of air/oxygen from outside. Wood stoves can consume huge amounts of oxygen; remember they are burning twenty-four hours a day for months. Today’s modern wood stoves all are equipped to have a duct go outside, that air duct will draw air inside but just for the fire. This is very different that The Cold Air Penetration we have been talking about down in the basement. This source of outside air is there to be consumed by the wood stove or the hot-water-heater; it does not rob your home of heat.
An exterior source of fresh air improves the performance of wood stoves, hot-water-heaters, and all other appliances that burn fuel. Obviously, if you have an electric hot-water-heater you will not heed outside air; that was covered in fourth grade science.
