Today let’s take a look at Floor Coverings.  Here’s an area that will go into every room of your new home.  By the way, do you like today’s photograph?  The puppy (all puppies are cute) is sitting on what looks like hardwood floors.  Here is a brief and quick overview of types of floor coverings:

The other day was July 4th with fireworks, hot dogs, burgers, picnics, and everyone’s attempt to escape from overwhelming heat.  Here in Burlington we moved back and forth up and down from 100 degrees.  Egad, it was hot.

We get a lot of calls and inquiries about building a new home and it seems as though many must first sell their existing home.  Granted, today here in Vermont it is most definitely a “Sellers’ Market” but it is to your advantage to sell your home for Top-Dollar so that you can move on to your new home.  Right?

So here are a couple things that we are going to suggest you do NOT DO:

The weather is crazy, one minute it snows, the next rain, and they are predicting 60’s for early next week.  Whaaaaat is going on?  Oh well, we can’t change any of it.

So, it remains a great time to plan for your new home.  And, here is today’s question – In the new plans, should you include a dining room?  When you design your new home it will obviously include:

There’s the saying that “….a picture is worth a thousand words.”

Take a look at today’s photograph, it was taken by a good friend of mine over in New York State a couple years ago.  Obviously, it is a building under construction on-site.  Did we mention the snow and ice that have engulfed the building site?

Isn’t that a fantastic photograph?  I so clearly points out why you wouldn’t want your new home built on-site.  If you stick-build a home one board at a time onsite it is guaranteed it will be exposed to all kind of harsh weather.

Many times, the first job for the carpenter is to build the stairs down to the basement.  We talked about this yesterday and the obvious reason for building those stairs first is a safety concern.  Going up and down on a ladder is not as safe as using a set of stairs.  But, now that those stairs are done it is time to start on the finish work.

While you are trying to make your home look spectacular so that it will sell quickly let’s take a minute and look back at some of the things that were once very beautiful but now are …….., well not quite a beautiful any more.

Avocado Green appliances.  Do you remember them?  I can remember when the refrigerator and the toilet were the same awful green avocado color.  Do you still have some of these relics left in your home?

A while ago it seemed as though grandma would always be doing the laundry in the basement.  Down there was the washing machine and as all know families can generate a mountain of dirty clothes.  By the way, how is it that infants and toddlers can get so many clothes where they need to be washed?  They are so small yet generate so much.  But, regardless the laundry was almost always in the basement.  And there was seldom ever a dryer; that is a fairly recent invention.

Let’s pretend that the home you really want to build is a Two-Story colonial where typically the bedrooms are upstairs.  Having the bedrooms and family areas on the second floor is a HUGE advantage as it creates that private space for yourselves and your family; guests don’t go upstairs.  Your guests will stay on the first floor where the living room, kitchen, dining room, and perhaps a den are all located.
